What volunteers have to say

We had an excellent campaign at Yantalo last week. I brought a record number of residents (9) and we saw a wide variety of interesting patients. Mery did her usual expert job of enlisting patients and supporting us throughout our clinical time. Thanks for making one of the best experiences of our internal medicine residency possible.

Providing primary care at Yantalo teaches our internal medicine residents how to practice in a totally different setting than they are used to. Working side by side with the clinic staff, rural physicians and Peruvian medical students is one of the many highlights of the trip.

Our responsibility is to provide care in a sustainable way, partnering with the local community to build capacity for the area in a way that works best for those that live there. It was an incredible interprofessional and service learning experience,”

As the trip coordinator it was my privilege and pleasure to work closely with Mery Padilla and the outstanding staff at the clinic in Yantalo. From antibiotics to pizza, translators to transportation, every need was graciously attended to.

Our team was led by Dr. George Hoerr, a talented plastic surgeon who obviously loved the children that he cared for. He operated many long hours and days to treat everyone he possibly could. Surgeries ranged from cleft lip/palate repair to scar revision to syndactyly repair.

The most profound memories from Yantalo were the expressions of gratitude and appreciation from the parents of children whose lives were changed. I was deeply touched by their tears and hugs.

The Yantalo Foundation is unique in its willingness to support others dreams. You can make a volunteer trip what you want it to be, it may take a bit more involvement on your part, but your ideas will be met with excitement and enthusiasm. This jungle community is a place you’ll never forget and want to return to over and over like I have!

All of us entered pediatric healthcare to try to improve the lives of children. Our teams experience in Peru with the Yantalo Foundation has made it possible to do this in a way that is visceral and gratifying. I am confident that the ongoing work of the Yantalo Foundation, in partnership with many others, will make a lasting difference in the lives of children in Peru.
